It’s like sitting in an arena at your favorite artist’s concert, and suddenly realizing there is no one there but you. Environmentalism is a movement pertinent to everyone, yet it seems to be less dominated by people of color. Stereotypes of melanated people not caring about the environment nor wanting to participate in certain outdoor activities, have been circling for decades; creating an even greater divide between two very vital communities. Onyx Light was created not only to bridge this gap but to also generate unity amongst all people who share a common love for this planet.

Onyx, a banded gemstone of varying colors, represents our unity and the hope that together, we can be a beautiful and powerful force. Light embodies both the value of enlightenment and bringing awareness to our greatest purpose of environmental education. Onyx Light is for anyone who has ever felt alone in their passion for natural spaces and the need for preservation and conservation. It is to show the world that being interested in environmental concerns and wanting to leave a better earth for future generations, is cool!

Dreamed up by two sisters with a shared passion for the environment and entrepreneurship, the onyx light apparel store was created to raise funds to help support the mission of making sure everyone has a seat at the table. Denaya Shorter, an environmentalist, educator, and director at a bay area environmental nonprofit, recruited her sister Davielle Shorter, a young professional with a degree in Business Management, to help make this dream a reality. We strive to aid in the much needed conversation of BIPOC and underrepresented communities being excluded and/or feeling disconnected from the undeniable fact that this planet needs them too.
